Speaker:Prof. Lang Sun
Born and raised in China, Lang obtained his first university degree from Anhui University, China and worked as a national tour guide, translator and interpreter for five years. He came to Canada in 1987 to pursue his graduate studies in French at the University of British Columbia, and in 1991 completed the Professional Development Program at Simon Fraser University to become a secondary school French immersion teacher. Prior to joining UBC Continuing Studies in 2005 as Program Director, Languages, Cultures and Travel, Lang served as senior manager in an international investment consortium in Hong Kong, and taught languages and bilingual court interpreting programs at Canadian secondary and post-secondary institutions for over 15 years.
As an educator in second language acquisition and teaching, Lang has devoted himself extensively to ongoing learning, as well as providing pedagogical leadership to colleagues in second language acquisition. In addition to major Chinese dialects, Lang speaks several languages fluently. He shares his enthusiasm for speaking different languages with thousands of adult learners each year. During his time at UBC Continuing Studies, Lang has developed and launched several new programs at UBC, including two UBC certificate programs in translation and interpretation and three UBC awards of achievement programs in translation.
